ASBESTOS LITIGATION: Tenneco Inc. Still Facing Exposure Actions
Tenneco Inc. is still subject to a number of lawsuits initiated by a significant number of claimants alleging health problems as a result of exposure to asbestos.
A small percentage of claims have been asserted by railroad workers alleging exposure to asbestos products in railroad cars manufactured by The Pullman Company, one of the Company's subsidiaries.
Nearly all of the claims are related to alleged exposure to asbestos in the Company's automotive emission control products. A small percentage of these claimants allege that they were automobile mechanics and a significant number appear to involve workers in other industries or otherwise do not include sufficient information to determine whether there is any basis for a claim against the Company.
Further, many of these cases involve numerous defendants, with the number of each in some cases exceeding 200 defendants from a variety of industries. Additionally, the plaintiffs either do not specify any, or specify the jurisdictional minimum, dollar amount for damages.
During 2008, voluntary dismissals were initiated on behalf of 635 plaintiffs and are in process. The Company was dismissed from an additional 74 cases.
Headquartered in Lake Forest, Ill., Tenneco Inc. produces automotive emission control and ride control products and systems. The Company serves both original equipment vehicle manufacturers (OEMs) and the repair and replacement markets, or aftermarket, worldwide.
